A competent researcher is needed to examine the application of AI in Eastern African newsrooms (Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya), according to the Eastern Africa Editors’ Society (EAES). The ubiquity, morality, and effects of AI on media freedom, public engagement, and democratic processes will all be evaluated in this study.
Taking into account the distinct media environment of the area, the researcher will map out present AI integrations and create best practices in line with the Paris Charter on AI and Journalism. The EAES goal of the project is to arm interested parties with the knowledge they need to use AI morally and strengthen democracy. With assistance from the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), this work will be conducted within the framework of the Africa Digital Rights Fund.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Design: To investigate the adoption of AI in African newsrooms, provide a thorough study framework and methodology.
- Data collection: Use surveys, interviews, case studies, and literature analysis to compile both quantitative and qualitative data.
- Mapping AI Adoption: Determine and record the scope, configurations, and efficacy of AI technology now employed by African media companies.
- Best Practices Development: Examine results to suggest realistic, moral, and long-lasting best practices for integrating AI.
- Reporting: To convey the research findings, insights, and suggestions, put together an extensive report and powerful presentations.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Academic Background: A master’s degree or above in a related discipline, such as data science, information technology, or media studies.
- Research Experience: Demonstrated research experience, ideally in the media and technology intersection.
- Strong grasp of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and how they are used in the media sector.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities are needed to evaluate data and produce insights that can be put into practice.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and writing communication abilities, with the capacity to succinctly and clearly convey complicated information.
- Regional Perspective: Knowledge of the media environment in Eastern Africa, including its particular opportunities and constraints.
