Graduate Research Scholarships Benefits

1# Stipend and fee offset scholarships

  • For students pursuing a master’s degree by research, the full cost offset is available for up to two years, or for up to four years if they are pursuing a doctorate.
  • For a maximum of two years for students pursuing a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students pursuing a PhD, living allowance of $37,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) will be provided. The living allowance, which includes limited paid maternity, sick, and parental leave, is subject to annual increases.
  • Students relocating from outside of Australia will get a relocation grant of $3000, or $2000 if they are coming from a state or territory other than Victoria.
  • For overseas students who need a student visa in order to study in Australia, there is the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership.

2# Fee offset scholarships

  • For master’s by research students, the full cost offset is available for up to two years, and for doctorate students, up to four years.

Eligibility and Requirements criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Have applied to the University of Melbourne and fulfilled the prerequisites for a graduate research degree, or
  • Currently, apply to the University of Melbourne for a graduate research degree.

Selection criteria

  • All domestic students admitted to the University of Melbourne’s Masters by Research or PhD program are eligible to apply for the Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).
  • Based on academic achievement, we grant Graduate Research Scholarships to both domestic and international students, which include a salary and a fee offset.
  • Eligible candidates are ranked and scored based on their research potential in their field of study and their academic performance in their most recent degree.
  • A degree completed at the same level as the research course for which you are applying for the scholarship, related work experience, peer-reviewed publications, specialized medical training, or the creation of unique music are some other considerations we take into account.

Application Process

  • We will automatically consider you for the Graduate Research Scholarships if you apply by the application closing date for a graduate research course (https://scholarships.unimelb.edu.au/awards/graduate-research-scholarships). We will let you know that we have added a scholarship application to your file within ten business days of receiving your course application.
  • Accepting an invitation for a graduate research course and deciding to postpone starting in order to evaluate your eligibility for a scholarship requires you to fill out an online application by October 31 in order to be eligible for consideration the following year. After you submit the online form, we will add a scholarship application to your record and notify you within ten business days.
  • To be eligible for a scholarship the next year if you are currently enrolled in a graduate research course, you must complete an online application.
