The fourth cohort of the Panel of the Wise proposed the creation of a Network of African Youth in Conflict Prevention and Mediation (WiseYouth) in order to highlight the critical role that youth play in efforts to bring about peace on the African continent.

Under the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the WiseYouth Network, a subsidiary mechanism of the Panel of the Wise, works to actualize the commitment for youth inclusion in peace-making in Africa by strengthening the role of youth in conflict prevention, mediation, and dialogue efforts. It also offers a platform for strategic advocacy, capacity building, and networking.

Major Responsibilities

  • Pushing for greater youth involvement in preventative diplomacy, mediation, and dialogue initiatives as leaders, collaborators, implementers, and beneficiaries;
  • Improve members’ abilities (training, peer learning, mentorships/fellowships, and so on) to support operational readiness for deployment in dialogue interventions, mediation, and preventative diplomacy;
  • Engage in regular conversations and exchanges with decision-makers regarding promoting and mainstreaming young involvement in mediation, dialogue, and preventative diplomacy;
  • Encourage the exchange of experiences and the recording of best practices, difficulties faced, inventions, and accomplishments by young people in the fields of mediation, preventative diplomacy, and conversation;
  • To address risks to peace, security, and stability, plan community-level conflict prevention, conversation and mediation, reconciliation, social cohesion, and trust-building initiatives;
  • Establish connections with national, regional, and international youth mediation networks.

Eligibility and Requirements

All African youth with proven and documented experience in discussion, mediation, and conflict prevention at all levels are eligible to apply. Applications from qualified young people—including young ladies, displaced people, and those with disabilities—who fit the following requirements are especially welcomed:

  • Identity: African-born youth residing in Africa.
  • Academic Qualifications: An undergraduate degree is necessary.
  • General Experience: Based on two to three examples of specific activities done to advance peace processes or facilitate multi-stakeholder engagement, demonstrable outcomes or credible documentation of three (3) years of experience in conflict prevention, mediation, and dialogue are required.
  • Language: a least of one official AU language, such as English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Swahili, or Spanish, at a functional level.
  • Age: Between 18 and 35 for the entire duration of their tenure.
  • Availability: be prepared to deploy and take part in different activities on behalf of the Network upon request.
