The Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Nairobi, is offering a new two-year master’s degree called the Master of Sustainable Management and Operations (SuMO). This program is being offered in association with Hamburg, Germany’s Kuehne Logistics University. The Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Operations for Resource Management and Food Supply (SCO), which was founded with funding assistance from DAAD, administers the scholarships. In order to improve expertise in sustainable management and operations, the Center brings together the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Dar es Salaam (UDBS), the Kuehne Logistics University (KLU), and the Kühne Foundation.

Program Overview

The goal of the SuMO Program is to equip students with the know-how needed for sustainable business operations. A highly interdisciplinary faculty of academics and business experts in the fields of agribusiness, operations management, supply chains, agricultural economics, business science, and sustainability will instruct the chosen applicants. This extensive training will distinguish the curriculum from traditional business management training by providing students with the skills and information required for sustainable operations.

Who Can Apply?

Candidates for the SuMO scholarship must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in agribusiness, agricultural economics, business administration, operations management, management science, supply chains, or a similar discipline that was earned.
  • Academic Performance: Excellent academic record with a GPA of at least an equivalent second class upper division or higher for undergraduate studies.
  • Research Experience: Prior experience conducting fundamental research in the domains of agribusiness, business, supply chains, operations management, or similar subjects is advantageous.
  • Analytical Skills: Use of pertinent data analysis software and fundamental analytical and research skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language proficiency.

Application Documents

Applicants need to send in the following documents:

  • One-page, hand-signed motivation letter in Times New Roman font with a size of 12, single-spaced.
  • Copies of degrees obtained from universities.
  • Copies of the transcripts from the school, with the grade system included.
  • certified copies of the school’s final national exam results.
  • A single recommendation letter, on official letterhead, hand-signed, officially stamped, and current in date, from a senior academic who is acquainted with your record in academia.
  • A copy of your resume.

Program Structure

The program will begin in October 2024 and run for two years full-time. The applicant will collaborate with their supervisors to construct their research project during the first year of coursework. Research activities, such as data collecting, analysis, publishing paper writing, and final thesis report production, will take up the second year. Sustainability, operations management, food and agricultural logistics, and related fields are the program’s top research priorities.

Supervision and Support

Ideally, candidates will have an external supervisor from UDSM or an international professor from KLU or the global academic network of the Kuehne Foundation in addition to their supervisor from UoN. Through exchanges with lecturers in the Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Operations for Resource Management and Food Supply (SCO), they will also get the chance to improve their professional and scientific abilities.

Publications

Publications are not required for this degree, although before graduating, candidates are urged to publish at least one journal paper.

Scholarship

For the first year, the scholarship will cover all costs; from October to December 2025, expenditures will be paid per rata.
